The Philip B Wilson Library (part of the Museum Services) is a well stocked local history reference library which houses almost 2,500 books, a range of major journals / publications and a number of Ordnance Survey maps dating from the 1830's. It offers a range of material on cultural traditions, local church history, transportation, Irish military history and architecture to name just a few, although the main focus of the library is on the history of Craigavon.
The library also holds a unique 700 volume collection, of the Ulster Quarterly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends, dating back to the middle of the seventeenth century. It is recognised as one of the most extensive collections of Quaker books in Ireland and reflects the long association of the Quakers with this area.
Tours of the library successfully commenced in December 2003. It is intended that they will run on a regular basis and focus on a range of topics relating to local history in the Craigavon area. So if you want to find out more about the Quaker influence in the area, prominent local families, the development of Craigavon as a 'new city' or simply how to go about researching local history, by using the resources available within the library, contact the Library Administrative Officer at Pinebank. |
